How to convert a Windows PC to VMware virtual machine  – Guide

Many people and/or companies have computers that they would be very upset if they failed. There are many cases where hardware failure or loss of software installation files can be catastrophic to recover a large computer or system connected to it. Fortunately, there is a way to preserve a computer without having to keep the physical hardware in a solid working state forever. VMware offers a free tool called VMware vCenter Converter that allows users to take a physical machine and create a virtual version of it while it is up and running.

How to convert a physical Windows PC to a VMware virtual machine

Install and launch DiskGenius Free Edition on the computer you want to migrate to virtual VMware. Click Tools> Virtualize current system in VMware virtual machine, see image below. Click on the image below to see a detailed view of how DiskGenius works.

Configure the virtual machine settings and click Create Disk to create a virtual disk. You can name the virtual machine, define the number of processors, the number of cores per processor and the memory size for the virtual machine. Then click Create Disc button to create a virtual disk (.vmdk).

The “Create VMware Virtual Disk” window opens and you can click the options button to set a location for the virtual disk. You can browse your computer to specify a location for the .vmdk disk and enter a name before clicking Save.

When you create a virtual disk, the default size is equal to the size of the system disk. You can modify this size by yourself, but make sure that the capacity is large enough to accommodate the operating system. ..

The conversion process will start automatically.

DiskGenius begins to migrate your current Windows operating system to the virtual disk you just created. ..

Hot Migration is the recommended option as it can perform system migration in the background. Therefore, you do not need to restart the system or interrupt work in progress. Wait for the process to complete.

In VMware Workstation, open the virtual machine you want to edit. To edit a virtual machine, launch VMware Workstation and open the virtual machine you want to edit. ..

Open the VM you saved in step 2. ..

VMware Workstation is now listed under the VMware tab in the Power Options dialog box. To power on this virtual machine, click Power on this virtual machine.
