How to use external storage on iPhone or iPad – Guide

With a unit connected, you can move files between the unit and your iPhone or iPad. Plus, Apple’s third-party apps let you import files directly from the external drive, so you don’t have to go through the Files or Photos app. It speeds up workflows, so you can, for example, import your photos directly into Lightroom CC instead of the Photos app. Of course this feature is dependent on third-party support; however, it is likely that there are too many applications to implement it.

If your device cannot be upgraded beyond iOS 12 (such as an iPhone 6), you cannot use an external storage device.

Connecting an External Storage Device

Connect your iOS device to the media you want to use as external storage and use the connecting cable to connect the other end of the cable to your TV.

Files is a frequently used app on your iPhone or iPad that you can find in the Utilities folder or swipe down from the Home screen to display the search bar. When you see Files appear, tap it.

Select the file you want to browse from the list on the left.

The external device is a phone. Remove it from the connecting cable and wait a moment, then insert it again. Note which location reappears.

You can drag files from an external device to your internal storage on iPad or iPhone.
